Paving in Delaware City, DE

Delaware City is a small historic town on the Delaware River, sitting off Route 9 near the mouth of the C&D Canal and a short drive from Bear. Its scale sets it apart from the busier towns we serve — most residential driveways here are small, and the pace of new paving work is slower and more occasional than in a growing suburb.

What commercial work exists in Delaware City tends to cluster around the waterfront — marina parking, boat-related storage lots, and small industrial sites near the canal — pavement that has to handle occasional heavy vehicle loads and stand up to the added moisture exposure of a riverfront location. Between small residential driveways and light marina/industrial paving, our work here stays modest and site-specific.

Our Process

How we pave a Delaware City driveway or lot

Every job follows the same disciplined sequence — the base and drainage work you can’t see is what keeps the surface you can see from cracking, sinking, or holding water a few winters later.

  1. 1

    Site inspection

We walk the site — a small residential driveway in this historic river town, or a marina, storage, or light-industrial lot near the C&D Canal off Route 9 — and evaluate the existing surface, the loads it carries, and the extra moisture that comes with a riverfront location.

  2. 2

    Removal & prep

Worn asphalt is fully removed along with any unstable base material. On waterfront sites, prep pays special attention to how wet the ground stays, since a damp subgrade undermines pavement that isn’t built to handle it.

  3. 3

    Grading & drainage

The surface is graded to move water off the pavement quickly — which matters most here, where the flat, low-lying ground near the river and canal drains slowly and the water table sits close to the surface.

  4. 4

    Stone base

A compacted stone base is installed or rebuilt — and built deeper and stronger for marina and industrial lots that take occasional heavy vehicle loads no ordinary driveway is designed to carry.

  5. 5

    Asphalt installation

Hot-mix asphalt is laid at a depth suited to the job — standard depth for small residential driveways, a heavier structural mix for boat-related storage and light-industrial pavement near the canal.

  6. 6

    Rolling & compaction

Professional rollers compact the asphalt into a dense, even surface — dense compaction is even more important on a riverfront site, where a tight surface keeps moisture from working its way into the base.

  7. 7

    Cleanup & finishing

We clean the site and handle finishing work; striping for marina and commercial lots is scheduled once the asphalt has cured enough to hold a line.

  8. 8

    Aftercare

Most residential jobs take one to a few days, and we schedule waterfront and commercial work around site access. Keep vehicles off for at least 48 hours and follow the aftercare we provide.

Repair, resurface, or replace

The right fix for your driveway

Delaware City’s work stays modest and site-specific — small residential driveways and light marina or industrial lots near the canal — so the right fix comes down to the base underneath and how much moisture the site holds. If the base is still sound, you have affordable options; if it’s failing, resurfacing over it only buys a little time before cracks reflect back through. Here’s how we tell the difference on a Delaware City property, and what each path means for cost and how long it lasts.

Asphalt driveway repair and patching

Sealcoat & crack fill

For a sound surface with minor wear. Sealing early matters even more near the water, where a tight, sealed surface keeps moisture and road salt from working into the base and speeding up wear.

Resurface

When a small residential driveway is worn but the base is still solid, a new asphalt layer over a prepared surface restores it for far less than a full rebuild.

Replace

Alligator cracking, sinking, or standing water — more likely on the damp, low-lying ground near the river, or under a marina lot carrying heavy loads — usually mean the base has failed. We remove and rebuild the base and drainage so the new surface actually lasts.

Maintenance

Keeping Delaware City asphalt in shape year-round

Spring

Inspect driveways and waterfront lots for cracks, potholes, and standing water after a winter of plow scraping and road salt — and watch low, damp spots near the river where water lingers longest.

Summer

Warm, dry weather is the best window for crack filling and sealcoating — drier conditions matter on a riverfront site, where you want the surface to seal fully before the ground turns damp again.

Fall

Clear leaves and debris from driveways and marina-lot drains, and repair open cracks before the freeze-and-thaw cycle and the first plow pass work them wider — standing moisture makes that cycle harder on pavement here.

Winter

Plows and road salt are hard on asphalt edges, and a damp surface near the water ices readily. Use plastic snow shovels, not metal blades, and keep harsh deicers off the surface where you can.

FAQ

Delaware City asphalt paving questions

Does paving near the waterfront raise stormwater or drainage concerns?

It can. Delaware City runs its own stormwater management program, and the low, flat ground near the river and C&D Canal drains slowly — so how a new lot or expanded surface handles runoff gets real attention here. On a larger project, Delaware’s sediment and stormwater rules can also apply once enough ground is disturbed. We confirm what applies with the city before we start.

Do I need a permit to pave a driveway or lot in Delaware City?

Delaware City is its own incorporated town, so local permitting runs through the city. A new or modified entrance onto a state road like Route 9 also falls under a DelDOT entrance permit. Simple resurfacing within an existing footprint is usually more routine. We check with the city and pull any permits before beginning.

Do marina and industrial lots need a different build than a driveway?

Yes. Boat-related storage, marina parking, and light-industrial lots near the canal take occasional heavy vehicle loads that an ordinary driveway isn’t designed for, so we build them on a deeper structural base with a heavier asphalt mix — and pay extra attention to drainage given the added moisture of a riverfront site.

When is the best time of year to pave in Delaware?

Late spring through early fall. Warm, dry conditions let the asphalt compact and cure properly, which matters in our Mid-Atlantic climate where winter brings plow scraping and road salt — and a dry window matters even more on damp riverfront ground.

My driveway is older — does it need resurfacing or a full replacement?

It depends on the base. Many older Delaware City driveways still have a sound base under worn asphalt, in which case resurfacing costs far less than a full rebuild. If we see alligator cracking, sinking, or standing water — more likely on the damp ground near the water — the base has likely failed and needs to be rebuilt.

How long does asphalt last with Delaware City’s winters?

With proper base preparation and regular sealcoating, an asphalt driveway or lot commonly lasts 15 to 20+ years, even with the freeze-thaw stress and snowplow scraping a full Mid-Atlantic winter puts on it — and good drainage on a riverfront site is key to reaching that.

Harry approached me after seeing our deteriorated driveway and as they were resealing the carparks in the neighborhood across the road, offered a competitive quote. After reviewing, we met a couple of days later and agreed on the work to be completed. It was worked upon the following morning and completed by midday. The work was clean and efficient and I was consulted with Harry at each stage of the process. The driveway is now immaculate and the work was of a high standard, completed in an efficient, expedited and professional manner. Harry was a pleasure to work with and I highly recommend this company in all aspects to a project resealing a driveway back to a high standard for years to come.

Great experience from start to finish! The whole process was easy, fast, and professional. I called around to a few other paving companies and some didn’t even bother to answer the phone. H&H got back to me quickly, came out and gave me a same-day estimate, and even started the work the same day. The quote was straightforward, the work was high quality, and he was very nice, informative, and professional throughout the entire process. I’m very happy with how everything turned out and would definitely recommend H&H Paving to my family and friends. If you’re looking for someone who actually answers the phone and gets the job done, I highly recommend them!
