TAR & CHIP — H&H Asphalt Paving Services
Cost-Effective: One of the primary benefits of tar and chip paving is its cost-effectiveness. Compared to traditional asphalt or concrete, tar and chip paving is much cheaper. It’s also easier to install, which can save you money on labor costs. Additionally, tar and chip paving requires minimal maintenance, which saves you money in the long run.
Rustic Appearance: Another advantage of tar and chip paving is its rustic appearance. Unlike traditional asphalt or concrete, tar and chip paving has a more natural look. It’s made up of small stones that are coated with hot liquid asphalt and then spread over a prepared surface. This gives it a unique and attractive look that can improve your property’s curb appeal.
Enhanced Traction: Tar and chip paving also provides enhanced traction, which makes it safer for drivers and pedestrians. The small stones in the tar and chip surface provide a better grip than smooth asphalt or concrete, especially in wet or icy conditions. If you have a steep driveway or walkway, tar and chip paving can provide added safety and peace of mind.
Residential and Commercial Use: Tar and chip paving is suitable for both residential and commercial use. It’s ideal for driveways, parking lots, and roadways. At H & H Asphalt Paving, we have experience working with both homeowners and business owners in Kent, New Castle and Sussex Counties in Delaware, to provide high-quality tar and chip paving solutions that meet their unique needs.

Our Tar & Chip Paving Process
Proper surface preparation, drainage, material application, and compaction all contribute to the performance of a tar and chip driveway or private road.
1. On-Site Evaluation
We measure the project area, inspect the existing surface and base, and identify drainage or grading concerns. Our team also determines whether tar and chip is the right option for the property.
2. Surface & Base Preparation
Vegetation, dirt, and loose debris are removed. The area may be regraded, and additional stone may be installed where needed to create a stable foundation.
3. Base Compaction
The prepared base is thoroughly compacted to create an even, stable surface before the binder is applied.
4. Asphalt Binder Application
Hot liquid asphalt binder is sprayed evenly across the prepared area with controlled coverage.
5. Stone Chip Placement
Clean stone chips are spread over the binder immediately after application to provide even coverage across the surface.
6. Rolling & Finishing
Rollers are used to press the stone into the binder and create a stable, consistent surface. We then tidy the edges and transitions and remove excess loose stone as appropriate.
7. Aftercare Guidance
We explain when the surface can be used, what to expect as the stone settles, and how to care for the newly installed area.
Light traffic may be permitted after the surface has been rolled and the binder has set sufficiently. The exact timing depends on the weather, materials, and project conditions. Heavy trucks and equipment may need to remain off the surface longer.
Drive slowly and avoid sudden braking, sharp turns, and rapid acceleration during the first few days while the stone becomes fully seated.
Tar & Chip Aftercare and What to Expect
Tar and chip requires little routine maintenance, but proper care immediately after installation can help protect the surface while the stone settles into place.
What to Expect After Installation
The completed surface will have a textured, rustic finish rather than the smooth appearance of asphalt.
Some loose stone is normal at first. The appearance and texture may change slightly as traffic helps seat the chips and excess material is removed.
Winter Care
Use care when removing snow from a tar and chip surface. A plow blade should be raised slightly or fitted with a rubber or poly edge to reduce the risk of dislodging stone.
Avoid aggressive scraping, metal edges that contact the surface directly, and excessive use of harsh deicing chemicals.
Freeze-and-thaw cycles can worsen loose edges, cracks, and drainage problems. Addressing these issues early can help prevent more extensive pavement damage.
When Can You Drive or Park on Tar & Chip?
Light vehicle traffic may be allowed once the binder has set and the surface has been rolled. Our team will provide reopening instructions based on the weather and conditions at the property.
During the first few days:
- Drive at a reduced speed.
- Avoid sudden stops and rapid acceleration.
- Avoid sharp turns while the vehicle is stationary.
- Keep heavy trucks and equipment off the surface until approved.
- Follow all site-specific instructions provided by our crew.
Tar & Chip Aftercare Checklist
- Allow our team to sweep excess stone at the appropriate time.
- Do not aggressively sweep newly installed stone before it has seated.
- Keep the pavement edges supported.
- Avoid power washing the surface during the initial curing period.
- Remove leaves, dirt, oil, and other debris.
- Address drainage or edge damage before it spreads.
- Contact our team if areas begin loosening or wearing unevenly.
