HOT TAR REPAIR — H&H Asphalt Paving Services
Our Hot Tar Asphalt Crack Repair Process
H&H Asphalt Paving Services offers Hot Tar Repair. Our repair and crack fill services to help maintain your commercial and residential asphalt and paving.
Hot tar crack repair works best when the cracks are properly prepared before the material is applied. Our process focuses on cleaning, drying, and sealing each appropriate crack to help reduce water intrusion and slow further pavement deterioration.
1. Pavement Inspection & Assessment
We inspect the asphalt to evaluate the crack width, depth, movement, and surrounding pavement condition. This helps determine whether hot tar crack repair, patching, or a more extensive repair is the right solution.
2. Crack Cleaning & Debris Removal
Loose asphalt, dirt, vegetation, and other debris are removed from the crack. Compressed air may be used to clear material from inside the opening and create a clean surface for adhesion.
3. Crack Routing, When Needed
Some cracks may be routed to create a more uniform reservoir for the repair material. Routing is generally considered for working cracks or cracks that need additional space for the sealant to move with the pavement.
Narrow, irregular, or non-working cracks may not require routing. Our team determines the appropriate preparation method based on the crack type and pavement condition.
4. Drying & Moisture Check
The cracks must be dry before hot tar is applied. When needed, a heat lance may be used to remove moisture and prepare the crack walls. Vegetation and remaining loose material are also removed before application.
5. Hot Rubberized Tar Application
Commercial-grade rubberized tar is heated and applied to the prepared cracks. The material bonds to clean, dry asphalt and remains flexible to accommodate pavement movement caused by traffic and freeze-and-thaw cycles.
6. Leveling & Blotting
The material is leveled or shaped as needed to create a clean finish. A blotter or detackifying material may be applied when appropriate to reduce tracking while the repair cools.
7. Final Walkthrough
Our team checks the completed repairs, removes loose debris, and confirms that the treated areas are ready for reopening.
Hot tar crack repair must be completed in dry weather and within the application range recommended for the material being used. Traffic can return after the sealant has cooled and cured enough to resist tracking or pickup. We provide site-specific reopening instructions once the work is complete.

Hot Tar Repair vs. Patching vs. Replacement
The right asphalt repair depends on whether the damage is limited to surface cracks, isolated failed areas, or widespread structural problems.
| Factor | Hot Tar Crack Repair | Asphalt Patching | Full-Depth Repair or Replacement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Prevent water intrusion and slow deterioration | Correct localized pavement failure | Rebuild structurally failed pavement |
| Best For | Linear or working cracks with a stable base | Potholes, raveled areas, soft spots, and limited base failure | Widespread cracking, settlement, drainage problems, and repeated failures |
| Does Not Fix | Base failure, major settlement, or drainage problems | Widespread structural damage | Not typically necessary for minor cracks or isolated damage |
| Typical Cost Tier | Lower | Moderate | Highest |
| Typical Downtime | Short | Moderate | Longer |
| Expected Longevity | Extends pavement life when applied at the right time | Restores damaged sections but may remain visible | Resets the pavement’s service life |
Hot Tar Crack Repair
Hot tar crack repair is a preventive maintenance service designed to seal cracks before water reaches the base and causes more extensive damage.
It is best suited for linear cracks, working cracks, and minor openings where the surrounding pavement and foundation remain stable. The repair can improve durability and appearance, but it does not restore structural strength or correct drainage, sinking, or settlement.
Asphalt Patching
Patching is a localized corrective repair. Failed asphalt is removed, the area is prepared, and new asphalt is installed in its place.
This option is commonly used for:
- Potholes
- Raveled or crumbling areas
- Isolated alligator cracking
- Soft spots
- Small areas of base failure
Patching can stop localized damage from spreading, although repaired sections may remain more visible than crack sealing.
Full-Depth Repair or Replacement
Replacement is a structural repair used when the asphalt and underlying base have experienced widespread failure. The damaged pavement is removed, and the foundation may be rebuilt before new asphalt is installed.
Replacement may be necessary when the pavement has:
- Widespread alligator cracking
- Repeated or expanding potholes
- Pumping water
- Major sinking or settlement
- Poor drainage
- Multiple failed repairs
- Extensive base deterioration
It requires a higher investment but restores the pavement from the foundation up and begins a new service life.
Which Asphalt Repair Do You Need?
- If cracks are the primary concern and the pavement remains stable, hot tar crack repair may be appropriate.
- If the pavement has potholes, soft spots, or isolated failed areas, patching may be needed along with crack sealing elsewhere.
- If the damage is widespread, recurring, or connected to base and drainage problems, full-depth repair or replacement may provide a better long-term solution.
Our team will inspect the pavement and explain which option offers the most practical value for the property.
What Our Customers Say
On March 18, 2019, we had Henry and his crew sealcoat our driveway. Henry was very professional, knowledgeable, accommodating and courteous. They did a terrific job.
