Paving in Woolwich Township, NJ

Woolwich Township is one of the fastest-growing communities in Gloucester County, with new residential development spreading out from Kings Highway (Route 551) and Route 322 toward Swedesboro and Logan. Most of our paving work here follows that growth directly — first-time driveway installations on freshly graded subdivision lots rather than repair of decades-old asphalt, where correct base compaction and grading matter more than anything else on day one.

South Jersey's sandy, low-lying coastal-plain soil sits close to the surface throughout this part of the county, so grading that carries water away from new foundations and garages is essential before the first course of asphalt goes down. Being minutes from the Delaware Memorial Bridge also means some of the commercial development following the residential growth needs pavement built for regional through-traffic, but the bulk of our work in Woolwich remains new-construction driveways and the roads connecting new subdivisions.

Our Process

How we pave a Woolwich Township driveway

Every job follows the same disciplined sequence — the base and drainage work you can’t see is what keeps the surface you can see from cracking, sinking, or holding water a few winters later.

  1. 1

    Site inspection

We walk the site — usually a freshly graded subdivision lot off Kings Highway (Route 551) or a new home closer to Route 322 — and evaluate the grade, the sandy subsoil, and how water will move once the driveway is down.

  2. 2

    Removal & prep

On new construction there’s little to remove; the focus is clearing and prepping the graded pad. On the township’s older lots we strip worn asphalt and any unstable base before anything new goes down.

  3. 3

    Grading & drainage

The surface is graded to carry water away from the new foundation and garage — critical in Woolwich, where the low-lying, sandy coastal-plain soil sits close to the surface and standing water finds a fresh edge fast.

  4. 4

    Stone base

A compacted stone base is built up on the graded lot — getting this right on day one matters more here than almost anywhere, since a first-time install with a weak base shows problems within a year or two, not a decade.

  5. 5

    Asphalt installation

Hot-mix asphalt is laid at a depth suited to the job — standard depth for subdivision driveways, a heavier commercial-grade mix for the regional-traffic development following the growth near the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

  6. 6

    Rolling & compaction

Professional rollers compact the asphalt into a dense, even surface built to stand up to daily household use and the steadily growing traffic along Route 322 and Route 551.

  7. 7

    Cleanup & finishing

We clean the site and handle finishing work; edge detailing and any striping for community roads or commercial lots is scheduled once the asphalt has cured enough to hold a line.

  8. 8

    Aftercare

Most residential jobs take one to a few days, and we coordinate with builders and HOAs where a community schedule is involved. Keep vehicles off for at least 48 hours and follow the aftercare we provide.

Repair, resurface, or replace

The right fix for your driveway

Most of Woolwich’s driveways are young — first-time installs on recently built subdivision lots rather than decades-old asphalt — so the question here is usually protecting a new surface, not deciding whether to tear one out. Where an older driveway does exist, the right fix still comes down to the base underneath: if it’s sound you have affordable options, and if it’s failing, resurfacing over it only buys a little time before cracks reflect back through. Here’s how we tell the difference on a Woolwich property.

Asphalt driveway repair and patching

Sealcoat & crack fill

The right call for most Woolwich driveways: a sound, newer surface where filling small cracks early and sealing on a regular cycle keeps water and winter salt out of the base through its first several South Jersey winters.

Resurface

When the surface is worn but the base is still solid — more common on the township’s older lots — a new asphalt layer over a prepared surface restores it for far less than a full rebuild.

Replace

Alligator cracking, sinking, or standing water usually mean the base has failed — sometimes from a first install rushed on poorly compacted sandy fill. We remove and rebuild the base and drainage so the new surface actually lasts.

Maintenance

Keeping Woolwich Township asphalt in shape year-round

Spring

Inspect a new driveway for settling or standing water after its first winter, and make sure grading is still carrying runoff away from the foundation across Woolwich’s low, sandy lots.

Summer

Warm, dry weather is ideal for the first sealcoat on a new driveway — on freshly installed asphalt, sealing on schedule is the single best thing you can do to protect the investment.

Fall

Clear leaves and debris from driveway edges and any community storm inlets, and fill open cracks before the freeze-and-thaw cycle and the first plow pass work them wider.

Winter

South Jersey winters are milder than up north but still swing across freezing. Use plastic snow shovels, not metal blades, and go easy on harsh deicers — especially on newer driveways still curing into their first couple of seasons.

FAQ

Woolwich Township asphalt paving questions

Do I need a permit to install or replace a driveway in Woolwich?

Often, yes. Woolwich’s ordinance sets access and surfacing standards in its newer residential and corridor zones, and driveways aren’t permitted to connect directly to Route 322 — access has to come off a secondary road. State-highway frontage falls under an NJDOT access permit, and the township zoning office handles the rest. We confirm what applies and pull any permits before we start.

My house is brand new — why does the driveway base matter so much?

Because a first-time install on freshly graded, sandy fill is where problems start if the base isn’t compacted properly. On Woolwich’s new-construction lots we build and compact the stone base and set the grade to carry water off the surface, so the driveway doesn’t settle or crack in its first year or two.

Will a bigger driveway affect stormwater or coverage limits on my lot?

It can. New Jersey and most municipalities cap how much of a lot can be impervious surface and regulate added runoff, so expanding a driveway may factor in while resurfacing the existing footprint doesn’t. On the township’s low, sandy lots, we plan grading and drainage carefully either way.

When is the best time of year to pave in South Jersey?

Late spring through early fall. Warm, dry conditions let the asphalt compact and cure properly, which matters even in South Jersey’s milder winters, where freeze-thaw swings and road salt still stress fresh pavement.

My driveway is older — does it need resurfacing or a full replacement?

It depends on the base. If the asphalt is worn but the base is still sound, resurfacing costs far less than a full rebuild. If we see alligator cracking, sinking, or standing water, the base has likely failed and needs to be rebuilt.

How long does asphalt last with our winters?

With proper base preparation and regular sealcoating, an asphalt driveway commonly lasts 15 to 20+ years, even with the freeze-thaw stress and occasional plowing a South Jersey winter brings.

Harry approached me after seeing our deteriorated driveway and as they were resealing the carparks in the neighborhood across the road, offered a competitive quote. After reviewing, we met a couple of days later and agreed on the work to be completed. It was worked upon the following morning and completed by midday. The work was clean and efficient and I was consulted with Harry at each stage of the process. The driveway is now immaculate and the work was of a high standard, completed in an efficient, expedited and professional manner. Harry was a pleasure to work with and I highly recommend this company in all aspects to a project resealing a driveway back to a high standard for years to come.

Great experience from start to finish! The whole process was easy, fast, and professional. I called around to a few other paving companies and some didn’t even bother to answer the phone. H&H got back to me quickly, came out and gave me a same-day estimate, and even started the work the same day. The quote was straightforward, the work was high quality, and he was very nice, informative, and professional throughout the entire process. I’m very happy with how everything turned out and would definitely recommend H&H Paving to my family and friends. If you’re looking for someone who actually answers the phone and gets the job done, I highly recommend them!
