Paving in North Wilmington, DE

North Wilmington — the Brandywine Hundred area — sits along the Concord Pike (Route 202) and Route 92 corridor between Greenville and Claymont, and it's one of the more established, affluent residential pockets in our service area. Homes here tend to be older but well-maintained, with driveways that are due for resurfacing rather than a first-time install, much like the well-kept properties farther out toward Greenville.

Concord Pike itself carries a steady run of commercial development — office buildings, retail centers, and business parking that see daily traffic and need durable, code-compliant surfacing built to last through repeated Delaware winters. Our work in North Wilmington covers both sides of that split: quiet residential driveway renewal set back from Route 202, and commercial lot paving along the corridor itself.

Our Process

How we pave a North Wilmington driveway or lot

Every job follows the same disciplined sequence — the base and drainage work you can’t see is what keeps the surface you can see from cracking, sinking, or holding water a few winters later.

  1. 1

    Site inspection

We walk the site — a well-kept residential driveway set back off Route 202, or an office or retail lot on the Concord Pike corridor itself — and evaluate the existing surface, drainage, and the daily traffic the new pavement has to carry.

  2. 2

    Removal & prep

North Wilmington’s driveways tend to be older but well-maintained, so worn asphalt is fully removed along with any unstable base material, and commercial sites on the corridor are cleared and prepped for a durable rebuild.

  3. 3

    Grading & drainage

The surface is graded to shed water off the pavement and away from the house or building — important in the Brandywine Hundred area, where the Piedmont ground underneath drains slowly and won’t forgive standing water.

  4. 4

    Stone base

A compacted stone base is installed or rebuilt — especially important on the clay-heavy Piedmont subsoil here, which holds water and shifts with the freeze-thaw cycle if the base isn’t built right.

  5. 5

    Asphalt installation

Hot-mix asphalt is laid at a depth suited to the job — standard depth for established residential driveways, a heavier commercial-grade mix for the office and retail lots along Concord Pike that see daily traffic.

  6. 6

    Rolling & compaction

Professional rollers compact the asphalt into a dense, even surface built to stand up to the steady commercial traffic along Route 202 and the day-in, day-out use of a family driveway.

  7. 7

    Cleanup & finishing

We clean the site and handle finishing work; code-compliant striping for commercial lots is scheduled once the asphalt has cured enough to hold a line.

  8. 8

    Aftercare

Most residential jobs take one to a few days, and we schedule commercial work around business hours and access. Keep vehicles off for at least 48 hours and follow the aftercare we provide.

Repair, resurface, or replace

The right fix for your driveway

North Wilmington’s homes tend to be older but well-maintained, with driveways due for resurfacing rather than a first-time install, while Concord Pike carries commercial lots built for daily traffic — so the right fix comes down to the base underneath. If it’s still sound, you have affordable options; if it’s failing, resurfacing over it only buys a little time before cracks reflect back through. Here’s how we tell the difference on a North Wilmington property, and what each path means for cost and how long it lasts.

Asphalt driveway repair and patching

Sealcoat & crack fill

For a sound surface with minor wear — the kind of upkeep that keeps a well-maintained North Wilmington driveway looking its part. Filling small cracks early keeps water and road salt out of the slow-draining clay base.

Resurface

The call we make most often on North Wilmington’s established driveways and commercial corridors: when the surface is worn but the base is still solid, a new asphalt layer over a prepared surface restores it for far less than a full rebuild.

Replace

Alligator cracking, sinking, or standing water usually mean the base has failed — common on decades-old driveways and where clay Piedmont subsoil has held water under a busy Route 202 lot. We remove and rebuild the base and drainage so the new surface actually lasts.

Maintenance

Keeping North Wilmington asphalt in shape year-round

Spring

Inspect established driveways and Concord Pike lots for cracks, potholes, and standing water after a winter of plow scraping and road salt, and clear leaves and debris from drains so runoff moves off the slow-draining Piedmont ground.

Summer

Warm, dry weather is ideal for crack filling and sealcoating on Route 202 office and retail lots — repairing early keeps water out of the clay base before fall commuter traffic picks back up.

Fall

Clear leaves and debris from driveway aprons and parking-lot drains, and repair open cracks before the freeze-and-thaw cycle and the first plow pass work them wider.

Winter

Plows and road salt are hard on asphalt edges and curb lines along a busy corridor like Concord Pike. Use plastic snow shovels on driveways, not metal blades, and keep harsh deicers off the surface where you can.

FAQ

North Wilmington asphalt paving questions

Do I need a permit to repave my driveway in North Wilmington?

For unincorporated Brandywine Hundred, New Castle County treats residential driveways as exempt from a building permit, and resurfacing within your existing footprint usually needs nothing. A new or widened entrance onto a state road like Concord Pike (Route 202) or Route 92 falls under a DelDOT entrance permit, and any expansion still has to meet the county’s Unified Development Code. We confirm what applies and pull any permits before we start.

Does a commercial lot on Concord Pike have extra requirements?

It can. Beyond a DelDOT entrance permit for the corridor frontage, larger commercial paving can trigger Delaware’s sediment and stormwater rules once a project disturbs 5,000 square feet or more, requiring an approved plan for managing runoff. Resurfacing an existing lot within its footprint is treated more simply. We help sort out which side of that line a job falls on.

Why does the clay soil here matter for a driveway?

The Piedmont clay under the Brandywine Hundred area drains slowly and swells and shrinks with the freeze-thaw cycle. Without a properly compacted stone base and grading that sheds water away from the surface, that movement telegraphs up as cracks and settling — which is why we spend the time on the base and drainage you never see.

When is the best time of year to pave in Delaware?

Late spring through early fall. Warm, dry conditions let the asphalt compact and cure properly, which matters in our Mid-Atlantic climate where winter brings plow scraping and road salt.

My driveway is older but well-kept — resurface or replace?

It depends on the base. Many of North Wilmington’s established driveways still have a sound base under worn asphalt, in which case resurfacing costs far less than a full rebuild and keeps the drive matching the caliber of the home. If we see alligator cracking, sinking, or standing water — often where clay has held water underneath — the base has likely failed and needs to be rebuilt.

How long does asphalt last with North Wilmington’s winters?

With proper base preparation and regular sealcoating, an asphalt driveway or lot commonly lasts 15 to 20+ years, even with the freeze-thaw stress and snowplow scraping a full Mid-Atlantic winter puts on it.

Harry approached me after seeing our deteriorated driveway and as they were resealing the carparks in the neighborhood across the road, offered a competitive quote. After reviewing, we met a couple of days later and agreed on the work to be completed. It was worked upon the following morning and completed by midday. The work was clean and efficient and I was consulted with Harry at each stage of the process. The driveway is now immaculate and the work was of a high standard, completed in an efficient, expedited and professional manner. Harry was a pleasure to work with and I highly recommend this company in all aspects to a project resealing a driveway back to a high standard for years to come.

We hired H&H Paving for a 1,400 sq ft driveway and a small retaining wall, and it looks phenomenal! I'm very happy with the professionalism and detail, it would’ve been 10 stars if it were possible!

Great experience from start to finish! The whole process was easy, fast, and professional. I called around to a few other paving companies and some didn’t even bother to answer the phone. H&H got back to me quickly, came out and gave me a same-day estimate, and even started the work the same day. The quote was straightforward, the work was high quality, and he was very nice, informative, and professional throughout the entire process. I’m very happy with how everything turned out and would definitely recommend H&H Paving to my family and friends. If you’re looking for someone who actually answers the phone and gets the job done, I highly recommend them!
