Paving in Hockessin, DE

Hockessin sits in the hillier, northwestern stretch of New Castle County along Route 41 — Lancaster Pike — and that rolling terrain plays into how we approach driveways here more than almost anywhere else we serve. Grading has to account for real elevation change, not just a flat slope toward the street, to keep water moving off the surface instead of pooling or cutting channels down a hillside drive.

Homes throughout the area are established and well-kept, with driveways old enough to need resurfacing rather than first-time paving, and a modest amount of commercial parking-lot work comes from retail pockets like the center around Lantana Square. What sets Hockessin apart from flatter parts of our service area is the terrain itself — sloped, wooded lots where drainage engineering matters as much as the asphalt mix, a concern it shares with nearby Greenville but for different reasons.

Our Process

How we pave a Hockessin driveway

Every job follows the same disciplined sequence — the base and drainage work you can’t see is what keeps the surface you can see from cracking, sinking, or holding water a few winters later.

  1. 1

    Site inspection

We walk the site — a sloped, wooded lot off Lancaster Pike, a long hillside drive, or a retail lot around Lantana Square — and read the real elevation change, the existing surface, and where water wants to run before we plan anything.

  2. 2

    Removal & prep

Hockessin’s established driveways are fully removed along with any unstable base material, and we prep around mature trees and grade changes that are part of nearly every lot in this northwestern corner of the county.

  3. 3

    Grading & drainage

On the rolling terrain here, grading has to carry water off the surface and down the slope without letting it pool at the garage or cut channels along a hillside drive — drainage engineering matters as much as the asphalt itself.

  4. 4

    Stone base

A compacted stone base is installed or rebuilt — especially important on the Piedmont clay subsoil up here, which drains slowly and shifts with the freeze-thaw cycle if the base isn’t built right.

  5. 5

    Asphalt installation

Hot-mix asphalt is laid at a depth suited to the job — standard depth for residential hillside driveways, a heavier commercial-grade mix for the retail parking around Lantana Square and along Route 41.

  6. 6

    Rolling & compaction

Professional rollers compact the asphalt into a dense, even surface built to stand up to steady local traffic along Route 41 — Lancaster Pike — and the day-in, day-out use of a family driveway.

  7. 7

    Cleanup & finishing

We clean the site and handle finishing work; striping for retail lots is scheduled once the asphalt has cured enough to hold a line.

  8. 8

    Aftercare

Most residential jobs take one to a few days, and we work around tree cover and access on sloped lots. Keep vehicles off for at least 48 hours and follow the aftercare we provide.

Repair, resurface, or replace

The right fix for your driveway

Most of Hockessin’s driveways are established and well-kept — old enough to need resurfacing rather than first-time paving — so the right fix comes down to the base underneath and how the slope has held up. If it’s still sound, you have affordable options; if it’s failing, resurfacing over it only buys a little time before cracks reflect back through. Here’s how we tell the difference on a Hockessin property, and what each path means for cost and how long it lasts.

Asphalt driveway repair and patching

Sealcoat & crack fill

For a sound surface with minor wear. Filling small cracks early keeps water and winter road salt out of the base — and on a sloped drive, keeps runoff from working its way into an open seam and undermining the surface below.

Resurface

The call we make most often in Hockessin: when the surface is worn but the base and grade are still solid, a new asphalt layer over a prepared surface restores it for far less than a full rebuild.

Replace

Alligator cracking, sinking, or water channeling down a hillside drive usually mean the base or the grading has failed — common where slow-draining Piedmont clay has held water and heaved. We remove and rebuild the base and drainage so the new surface actually lasts.

Maintenance

Keeping Hockessin asphalt in shape year-round

Spring

Inspect for cracks, potholes, and washed-out edges after a winter of plow scraping and road salt, and clear leaves and debris from the low end of a sloped drive so meltwater runs off instead of pooling.

Summer

Warm, dry weather is ideal for crack filling and sealcoating — repairing early keeps water out of the clay base before fall, and a fresh seal helps a long hillside drive wear evenly from top to bottom.

Fall

Clear leaves off the surface and out of drainage swales, and repair open cracks before the freeze-and-thaw cycle and the first plow pass work them wider — wooded Hockessin lots drop a lot of leaf litter.

Winter

Plows and road salt are hard on asphalt edges, and a sloped drive ices where water sits. Use plastic snow shovels, not metal blades, and keep harsh deicers off the surface where you can.

FAQ

Hockessin asphalt paving questions

Do I need a permit to repave my driveway in Hockessin?

For unincorporated Hockessin, New Castle County treats driveways as exempt from a building permit, and simple resurfacing within your existing footprint usually needs nothing. If you build a new entrance or widen one onto a state road like Route 41 (Lancaster Pike), that side falls under a DelDOT entrance permit, and any expansion still has to meet the county’s Unified Development Code. We confirm what applies and pull any permits before we start.

My driveway runs down a slope — does the grading really change the job?

Yes, more than almost anywhere else we work. On Hockessin’s rolling terrain we grade so water runs off the surface and down the hill in a controlled way rather than pooling at the garage or cutting a channel down the drive. Getting that right is what keeps a hillside driveway from failing early.

When is the best time of year to pave in Delaware?

Late spring through early fall. Warm, dry conditions let the asphalt compact and cure properly, which matters in our Mid-Atlantic climate where winter brings plow scraping and road salt.

My driveway is decades old — does it need resurfacing or a full replacement?

It depends on the base. Many of Hockessin’s established driveways still have a sound base under worn asphalt, in which case resurfacing costs far less than a full rebuild. If we see alligator cracking, sinking, or water channeling down the slope — often where slow-draining Piedmont clay has held water underneath — the base has likely failed and needs to be rebuilt.

Why does clay soil matter for a driveway up here?

The Piedmont clay under much of northwestern New Castle County drains slowly and swells and shrinks with the freeze-thaw cycle. Without a properly compacted stone base to spread the load and move water, that movement telegraphs up through the asphalt as cracks and settling — which is why we spend the time on the base you never see.

How long does asphalt last with Hockessin’s winters?

With proper base preparation and regular sealcoating, an asphalt driveway commonly lasts 15 to 20+ years, even with the freeze-thaw stress and snowplow scraping a full Mid-Atlantic winter puts on it — and a good drainage plan on a sloped lot is what protects that lifespan.

Harry approached me after seeing our deteriorated driveway and as they were resealing the carparks in the neighborhood across the road, offered a competitive quote. After reviewing, we met a couple of days later and agreed on the work to be completed. It was worked upon the following morning and completed by midday. The work was clean and efficient and I was consulted with Harry at each stage of the process. The driveway is now immaculate and the work was of a high standard, completed in an efficient, expedited and professional manner. Harry was a pleasure to work with and I highly recommend this company in all aspects to a project resealing a driveway back to a high standard for years to come.

Great experience from start to finish! The whole process was easy, fast, and professional. I called around to a few other paving companies and some didn’t even bother to answer the phone. H&H got back to me quickly, came out and gave me a same-day estimate, and even started the work the same day. The quote was straightforward, the work was high quality, and he was very nice, informative, and professional throughout the entire process. I’m very happy with how everything turned out and would definitely recommend H&H Paving to my family and friends. If you’re looking for someone who actually answers the phone and gets the job done, I highly recommend them!
